What do parents and family members do during Sibs & Kids Weekend?

Sibs & Kids Weekend is Mason’s gift of relaxation to our parents and family members. This is a time for you to stay home without your kids or to visit the university. Find a local hotel and enjoy all that Northern Virginia and the D.C. area have to offer! Family members are invited to join us during our Welcome Lunch on Saturday at Noon in the Hub Ballroom. On Sunday, we also invite you to Breakfast and Bingo at Ike’s for a chance to gather as a family.

Can more than one sibling/kid attend?

We ask that each Mason student, faculty or staff member invite no more than three sibs or kids to ensure that maximum safety precautions can be taken for each participant in activities throughout the weekend, as well as in the residence hall if participants stay overnight.

Do participants have to be the brother/sister of a Mason student?

No! Sibs & Kids Weekend is designed to provide a glimpse into the life of a Mason Patriot for anyone between the ages of 6 and 18. This means that Mason students can invite siblings, cousins, friends or whomever, and that Mason faculty and staff members can invite their children, nieces and nephews!

My Mason student can only participate in some of the Sibs & Kids Weekend activities. Can their guest(s) still participate?

Mason students, faculty and staff must accompany their guest(s) during all Sibs & Kids Weekend activities. Unaccompanied guests are not allowed at any Sibs & Kids Weekend activities, the residence halls, or other areas on campus.

My child is younger than 6 years old. Can they still participate in any of the Sibs & Kids Weekend activities?

We require that all Sibs & Kids Weekend participants be between 6-18 years of age. Our programs are specifically designed for the age group of at least 6 years of age. We currently do not have suitable resources, programs or services for younger guests at this time. Family members of all ages, however, are invited to join us for lunch on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday!

Are refunds available?

No refunds will be issued for Sibs & Kids Weekend registrations.

Check-In

What do I need to do before I check-in for the weekend?

  • Complete the online Sibs & Kids Weekend registration.
  • Complete and submit the online Sibs & Kids Weekend permission of participation waiver with an e-signature from the visiting guest’s legal parent or guardian.

The online waiver(s) must be submitted to New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) on or before April 18, 2020.

Before checking in, Mason students must also have obtained their roommates’ consent to have their Sibs & Kids Weekend participant stay with them on Saturday night in the residence halls, if that was the arrangement that was made.

What do visiting guests do with their belongings after they have checked-in for the weekend?

There will be time for participant(s) to drop off any belongings in the residence halls before activities begin.

Can I register to attend in-person at check-in?

Yes. Online registration for Sibs & Kids Weekend will close on Sunday, April 12 at 11:59 p.m. (EST). To register on site, the participant must be accompanied by a legal parent or guardian who can complete the permission of participation waiver. Cash, check, and credit card (MasterCard and Visa only) will be accepted for on-site registration.

Logistics

What should participants bring if they are staying overnight in the residence halls?

A sleeping bag and pillow, comfortable clothing, toiletries, extra money for snacks if needed (i.e. at vending machines), medications, and any other necessities for an overnight stay.

Where will participants sleep at night?

If the Mason student lives on campus and the participant is between the ages of 13 and 18, guests are permitted to stay with their Mason student overnight in the residence hall only on Saturday, April 18. If the Mason student does not live on campus or if their guest(s) is younger than 13, they are not permitted to stay overnight on campus during Sibs & Kids Weekend.

Also, please note that participants whose Mason student lives on campus are not permitted to stay overnight in the residence hall Friday, April 17 or Sunday, April 19.

Where should I arrange overnight accommodations if staying in a residence hall is not an available option?

New Student and Family Programs is pleased to offer discounted accommodations at marriott.com using the coporate code “G57”. Visit masonfamilyevents.gmu.edu/where-to-stay for more information and to book your room.

Are Mason chaperones present during activities listed on the schedule?

University staff and student volunteers will be present with participants at all Sibs & Kids Weekend events. In case of an emergency, there will be campus resources such as Housing and Residence Life staff and Campus Police to contact for hours after scheduled events.

When and where can participants be picked up after the weekend is over?

The last event on the Sibs & Kids Weekend schedule, breakfast, ends at noon on Sunday, April 19. There is no designated pick-up time or location that day, so please make arrangements with your Mason student as to when and where you will meet to pick up your child. Also, please note that participants are not permitted to stay overnight in the residence hall on Sunday, April 19 so they must be picked up at some point on Sunday.

Who is called in the event of an emergency?

The parent or guardian who completed the permission of participation waiver and registration will be called in case of an emergency. The contact information given on the online registration form will be used. If the parent or guardian cannot be reached, the university will take measures to ensure the safety of the student and visiting participant by seeking out appropriate medical attention (if needed) as described in the waiver.
