We will continue to add new events to the Family Weekend schedule, so please check back frequently! You can also stay up-to-date by downloading our schedule app at masonfw19.sched.com. Family Weekend features several events that show families the best of Mason and all it has to offer. Our schedule provides families with the opportunity to come together to connect, have fun, celebrate and make new memories, which is why we have events for Mason students, adults and children of all ages, as well as Mason faculty and staff.

Online registration for Family Weekend 2019 is now closed. You can still join us for Family Weekend by walking-in and registering on-site at Check-In, Noon-6 p.m. on Friday, November 8 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, at the Johnson Center, Dewberry Lobby. Location: Aquatic and Fitness Center, Group Fitness Room

A cross training class that mixes traditional body weight exercises with cardio interval and strength training. Each class is designed to push you to work your hardest no matter what your fitness level!

Group exercise policies:

  • All participants must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Appropriate workout attire required, including shirts and workout pants or shorts. Denim and Khakis is not permitted.
  • If equipment is being used in these classes that can be dropped on the foot, then participants must wear shoes for that portion of class.
  • Admittance to all classes requires registration through the front desk. The front desk will not distribute tickets five minutes after a class has started.
  • There is no admittance ten minutes after a class has begun.

Mason Hillel is hosting a special Shabbat on the 80th yartzeit of the Kristallnacht. Rabbi Bruce Aft will lead services and Andras Simonyi, former Hungarian ambassador to the US, will be the keynote speaker. Simonyi will recount his family's history in the Holocaust and his journey to be appointed to represent his government. All are invited to attend.

Join us for a trip to Lorton, VA to see George Mason's home, Gunston Hall. Guests will receive a guided tour of the mansion with outbuildings, 550 acres of grounds and hiking trails to visit. For more information about Gunston Hall, visit gunstonhall.org.

8:45- 11 a.m.: Mason on Location: Historic Fairfax (special event ticket required)

This bus tour showcases the history of Fairfax County from the founding of George Mason University and the CIA to the Civil Rights Movement.

The bus will depart promptly at 9 a.m. Snack bags will be provided for every participant.

8:45 a.m.-1 p.m.: Mason on Location: D.C. Bus Tour (special event ticket required)

Location: Parking Lot K

Mason's close proximity to Washington, D.C. makes this bus tour a must for those interested in sightseeing and learning more about the nation's capital. The tour will take participants all around the monuments and special landmarks of D.C. and will make one stop where participants can get off the bus and explore the monuments by foot.

The bus will depart promptly at 9 a.m. Snack bags will be provided for every participant.

8:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Mason on Location: Great Falls (special event ticket required)

Location: Parking Lot K

Great Falls is one of Northern Virginia’s most popular hiking destinations. With over 800 acres of land just 15 miles from the Nation’s Capital, the park is filled with rich history and beautiful landscapes. Families will enjoy a short hike guided by staff and students from Mason Outdoor Adventure. 

The bus will depart promptly at 9 a.m. Snack bags will be provided for every participant.

Ever wonder what goes on inside the real criminal minds? Come listen to Dr. Mary Ellen O'Toole, Director of the Forensic Science program at Mason, share her experience as one of the FBI's most senior and accomplished profilers. During her career, she worked on many high-profile cases, including the Elizabeth Smart abduction, the Unabomber case, the Green River Killer, and the Natalee Holloway investigation.

Want to prove yourself to be the best on the water? Put your sailing skills to the test in the Regatta de Cardboard! Participants will create sea-worthy vessels out of only cardboard and duct tape, and then race across the AFC competition pool. Please note that swimwear is required to get into the pool.

Conflict is a normal fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be so painful and destructive. Instead, building peaceful societies requires that we support constructive efforts to resolve conflicts, and that we listen, dialogue, and empathize across lines of difference. Dr. Douglas Irvin-Erickson, Assistant Professor for the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution will discuss how young people can contribute to building peace in their communities, their country, and their world.

2 p.m.: The Four Seasons (special event ticket required)

Rediscover the beauty of The Four Seasons, both in its original form and also in a completely reimagined one. In this groundbreaking program, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, led by music director and charismatic violin virtuoso Daniel Hope, pairs Vivaldi’s iconic masterpiece The Four Seasons with neo-classical composer Max Richter’s piece Recomposed. Written in 2012 specifically for Hope, his recording of Richter’s piece topped classical music charts in 22 countries and received widespread critical acclaim. “It’s a beautiful recomposition,” The Independent raved, “with undulating string beds carrying Daniel Hope’s lyrical lone violin lines.” You won’t want to miss this exciting classical concert that celebrates a masterwork and makes it new again.

5:30-6:30 p.m.: Group Fitness Class: Flow MotionFITT

Location: Aquatic and Fitness Center, Competition Pool

Join us for one of the hottest workouts in the pool! Flow MotionFITT, where strength, balance, cardio endurance and functional movement patterns meet on the mat to enhance your performance in the water. This 60 minute class will tone and strengthen your core like never before. We throw everything on the mats! Ripples, bumps and FUN! All levels are welcome. Group exercise policies:

  • All participants must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Appropriate workout attire required. Must wear swimwear.
  • Admittance to all classes requires registration through the front desk. The front desk will not distribute tickets five minutes after a class has started.
  • There is no admittance ten minutes after a class has begun.
